Artists and Dance Companies

This page has been developed for artists or dance companies interested in being considered for presentation by Dance Victoria in an upcoming season. The following are things you should know before you contact us.

  1. Typically Dance Victoria makes decisions in the summer for presentations the subsequent season. For example, decisions for the 2009/10 season were made in the summer of 2008.

  2. Dance Victoria presents about 16 – 20 performances of seven productions annually.

  3. Dance Victoria presents classical and contemporary dance.

  4. Our two venues are the Royal Theatre (1435 seats) and the McPherson Playhouse (780 seats). Both are fully restored, early 20th century vaudeville houses and both have a  very formal proscenium arch. The interior architecture dictates the style of work that Dance Victoria presents. Dance pieces that work best in these venues are mid to large scale, with excellent production values (costumes, lights). Unfortunately, at this time Dance Victoria does not have the facility to present smaller “studio” works.

  5. Dance Victoria is very reliant on ticket sales in order to sustain the operations of the organization. Before booking a dance company, the Producer must be confident that he can sell a minimum 1,000 tickets.

  6. Any dance company proposing a presentation needs to have excellent marketing material available – that means striking high resolution images available for download, media releases and program materials. As well, the proponent will need a comprehensive tech rider.

  7. The Producer is more likely to present works that he has seen. In rare cases, when he is familiar with a company’s past works he will include a program that he has not seen. If you are interested in being presented by Dance Victoria, the first step is to invite the Producer to see a performance. Please give as much advance notice as possible.
