Dance Salons – Conversations on Dance

It is with excitement that we announce the upcoming Dance Victoria Dance Salons: a trio of interactive conversations led by local Dance Historian, Dr. Allana Lindgren.

Dr. Lindgren is an Assistant Professor at the University of Victoria, teaching twentieth century theatre history, as well as performance research methodologies and interdisciplinary artistic collaborations. Her research is motivated by an interest in how the performing arts – particularly dance and theatre – intersected with shifting social attitudes and values in North America during the twentieth century.

The Dance Victoria Dance Salons include:

Lecture 1 – March 1st
• What is Contemporary Dance? What is Contemporary Ballet? Where did these styles emerge from? Are classically trained companies feeling obligated to push the boundaries of dance – where does this pressure come from?

Lecture 2 – April 5th
• How are the definitions and attitudes towards dance changing – what are the cultural policies and what impact do they have on dance? A comparison of the state of contemporary dance in Australia and in Canada.

Lecture 3 –April 26th
• What are important choreographic works? What makes a choreographic work important or memorable? A discussion of aesthetic values – what do we value, and why?

The lectures are held at Victoria Dance Connection, 2750 Quadra St. and start at 1:30pm.
